Mission Bay Aquatic Center to host safe boating event May 22

National Safe Boating Week is May 22-28, 2010. Boating safety partners across the U.S. and Canada have teamed up to promote safe and responsible boating, including voluntary wear of life jackets.

“Life jacket wear is the number one precaution a boater can take to stay safe on the water,” states Virgil Chambers, Executive Director of the National Safe Boating Council. “The new models on the market today make it easier than ever for a boater to have fun and stay safe on the water.”

Drowning remains the primary cause of death in recreational boating accidents.

Statistics released by the U.S. Coast Guard indicate that 90 percent of boaters who drowned in 2009 were NOT wearing their life jackets.

In San Diego, an event is being held on Saturday, May 22 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center located on Santa Clara Point in Mission Bay Park to promote boating safety and the wearing of lifejackets.

This event will feature free lifejackets for youth and adults (while supplies last), free introductory kayaking, sailing and rowing lessons, free hot dogs, chips, vegetables and lemonade, and boating safety information fair.
