			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>CSSA Now Accepting Applications for the CSU Student Trustee Position</strong></p>
<p>The California State Student Association (CSSA) is accepting applications for the position of CSU Student Trustee. As one of the two student members of the California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees, the member serves as the voice and representative for the students of the 23 CSU campuses. Currently there are 25 Trustees, 5 ex officio members who include the Governor of California, Lieutenant Governor, Speaker of the Assembly, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the Chancellor.</p>
<p>Undergraduate and graduate students interested in <a href="http://www.csustudents.org/whoweare/documents/Student-Trustee-Application_2012-14_for-Web.doc">applying</a> must submit application by: <strong>April 6, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.</strong> No late applications will be accepted.</p>

term as Student Trustee (through June 30, 2014). </p>

<h3>The <a href="http://www.sandiegoriver.org/" target="_blank">San Diego River Park Foundation</a> &#8211; River Survey and Field Data Collection Santee</h3>
<p>No Experience necessary. Volunteers with an interest in the ecology of San Diego County are needed to help collect data on invasive plant species, presence of trash and other information along the San Diego River in Santee.</p>
<p>Meeting atMastPark, teams will walk predetermined sections of the river with a trained team leader and use GPS, cameras and field data sheets to gauge the health of the river.</p>
<p>This is a great way to see the river and make a difference for its future and a wonderful hands-on learning opportunity.</p>
<p>All data collected will be used to help in efforts to restore our river back to a healthy state. Community service hours can be verified for those that need them.</p>

<h3>The <a href="http://www.sandiegoriver.org/" target="_blank">San Diego River Park Foundation</a> &#8211; Clean up event</h3>
<p> As part of our ongoing mission to save theSan DiegoRiverand its surrounding habitat, volunteers are needed to help remove trash and debris from the riverbed in the Mission Valley Preserve near the YMCA onFriars Rd.</p>
<p>TheSan DiegoRiveris a very important waterway from both an historic and ecological standpoint, home to many rare and endangered plants and animals. Help us to restore our river and provide a clean and healthy habitat for the native plants and wildlife that call the river home.</p>
<p>No experience necessary, all tools and supplies provided. Community service hours can be verified for those that need them. Participants are asked to wear sturdy clothing that can get a little dirty and also wear closed shoes. Hat and sunscreen are recommended. Groups and people of all ages are welcomed to help.</p>

<p>I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) works to promote regional awareness of environmental issues including resource conservation, waste reduction and recycling, community enhancement, and pollution prevention.</p>
<p>Beautify Chula Vista Day (BCVD) is a dynamic community cleanup event organized by ILACSD and the City of Chula Vista, and made strong by thousands of enthusiastic volunteers. Save the date for the 9th Annual BCVD which is taking place at HarborsidePark. Last year&#8217;s event was a tremendous success, with over 600 community members out in full force cleaning up trash and removing graffiti. <p>San Diego State University today announced a <a href="http://campaign.sdsu.edu/campaign/" target="_blank">$500 million fundraising campaign</a> to support its students and faculty and transform SDSU into a leading national research university.  </p>
<p>“<em>The Campaign for SDSU</em> will leverage the university’s unique strengths and its synergy with the San Diego region in support of our students, our faculty, our staff and our community,” said SDSU President Elliot Hirshman. “At a time when state support has been reduced, this effort is critically important to ensure SDSU can continue to provide a high-quality educational experience for the next generation of students.”</p>

<p><a href="http://campaign.sdsu.edu/campaign/" target="_blank"><em>The Campaign for SDSU</em></a> is the first university-wide fundraising campaign in SDSU history. It includes all of SDSU’s colleges, SDSU Athletics and KPBS. Hirshman said private funding is needed by the university to attract and retain top faculty, support innovative programs and assist talented students through scholarships, as well as move the university forward with strategic investments in people and programs.</p>
<p><strong>Campaign goes public </strong></p>
<p>Today’s announcement launches the “public phase” of what is expected to be a seven-year <a href="http://campaign.sdsu.edu/campaign/" target="_blank">fundraising campaign</a>. For the past four years, campus leaders have worked behind the scenes to secure large leadership gifts from the university’s top donors. To date, this effort has netted more than $270 million in gifts and pledges, setting university fundraising records along the way.  </p>
<p>“Thanks to the generosity of our closest alumni and friends, SDSU is well on its way to its goal of raising $500 million but the most crucial stage of the campaign is still ahead of us,” said Costco CEO and founder Jim Sinegal, ‘59.  </p>
<p>With the theme “Leadership Starts Here,” SDSU will be reaching out to the entire community with messages about the university’s important mission and how their support is essential to the university’s success.</p>
<p><a href="http://campaign.sdsu.edu/campaign/" target="_blank"><img title="logo - The Campaign for SDSU" src="http://newscenter.sdsu.edu/sdsu_newscenter/images/campaignlogo200b.png" alt="logo - The Campaign for SDSU" width="255" height="203" align="left" border="0" /></a>Hirshman, who became SDSU’s eighth president in July, said there has never been a better time to re-engage SDSU’s 250,000-plus alumni — 60 percent of whom live in San Diego County.</p>
<p>Hirshman cites SDSU’s strong academic reputation, life-changing research, community engagement and athletic success as evidence of SDSU’s momentum. <em>The Campaign for SDSU</em> will propel the university forward by raising funds to support student scholarships, faculty endowments and academic programs, and secure San Diego State’s future as a university with significant regional, national and global impact.</p>
<p><strong>Campaign goals </strong></p>
<p>The <em>Campaign for SDSU</em> has <a href="http://campaign.sdsu.edu/campaign/initiatives.aspx" target="_blank">four distinct initiatives</a> aimed at enriching students’ lives and strengthening the economy of the San Diego region:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong><a href="http://campaign.sdsu.edu/campaign/engage.aspx" target="_blank">Engaging the Region</a>:</strong> San Diego State produces the future leaders for critical local industries such as bio-tech, communications, hospitality and tourism, construction management and border studies. The university’s strong ties to the San Diego community are evident in its initiatives supporting K-12 education, student veterans and more. <em>The Campaign for SDSU </em>will support existing programs and create new initiatives that enhance San Diego’s reputation as a catalyst for innovation and discovery.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://campaign.sdsu.edu/campaign/innovate.aspx" target="_blank">Leading Innovation and Discovery</a>:</strong> The research productivity of SDSU faculty creates numerous opportunities for students to participate in life-changing projects on and off campus in areas such as cardiovascular research, vaccine development and sustainability. <em>The Campaign for SDSU</em> will seek support to create additional endowed chairs, thereby attracting leading scholars to enrich the academic life of the campus and enhance the value of an SDSU degree for alumni and current students.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://newscenter.sdsu.edu/campaign/global.aspx" target="_blank">Competing Globally</a>:</strong> San Diego State University leverages its strategic location on the Pacific Rim and the border of Latin America to foster a highly diverse, globally focused culture of research and scholarship. <em>The Campaign for SDSU</em> will increase scholarship opportunities for students seeking to study abroad, build endowments to attract faculty with international expertise in multiple disciplines and strengthen programs that tap the potential of students to take their place in our global society.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://newscenter.sdsu.edu/campaign/fuelpotential.aspx" target="_blank">Fueling Potential</a>:</strong> In the last 20 years alone, SDSU has conferred more than 145,000 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees. That’s 145,000 lives transformed by the power of an SDSU education. Gifts to the Fuel Potential Scholarship Campaign, part of <em>The Campaign for SDSU</em>, ensure that SDSU’s most deserving students have access to the transformational power of a college degree and create a healthy culture of philanthropy among the youngest Aztecs. More than $32 million has already been raised for the Fuel Potential Scholarship campaign. </li>

All gifts to San Diego State University are accepted and administered by The Campanile Foundation (TCF), an official 501 [c] [3] auxiliary organization of San Diego State University.</p>

<p>Who doesn&#8217;t love the United States Constitution? It is a living, breathing document that sets the basis for the freedoms and liberties that we enjoy in this country.</p>
<p>The U.S. Constitution is the oldest written national constitution still in operation, and many of the nations that have established themselves in the decades since,  have turned to this document as a model for their own constitutions.</p>
<p>September 17th is <a href="http://edsitement.neh.gov/celebrating-constitution-day#node-21279">Constitution Day</a>, commemorating the day in 1787 when, at the end of a long hot summer of discussion, debate and deliberation, the Framers signed America’s most important document. But its worth reminding ourselves that the document itself would not become important, would not become &#8220;The Supreme Law of the Land&#8221;, until it was first sent to Congress for approval and then to the individual states to be throughily debated, argued about, and ratified by the representatives of the people in specially elected state constitutional conventions.</p>
<p>SDSU and many schools across the nation are commemorating Constitution Day with special events, including a reading of the Constitution held at SDSU. AS Vice President of Finance <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rob-OKeefe-SDSU-Associated-Students-Vice-President-of-Finance/199369050106112">Rob O&#8217;Keefe</a> and A.S. Morale Commissioner Peter Humphrey dressed up in costumes representing outfits from the time of the Constitution&#8217;s writing and got students pumped up about the document.</p>

<p>San Diego State University is known around the country for its model of this thing called &#8220;<strong>shared governace</strong>&#8220;.</p>
<p>What exactly does &#8220;<strong><a href="http://newscenter.sdsu.edu/ootp/sharedgovernance.aspx" target="_blank">shared governance</a></strong>&#8221; mean, though?</p>
<p>SDSU&#8217;s Office of the President defines it as this:</p>
<blockquote><p>Each member of the SDSU community, be it faculty, staff or student, shares responsibility for reaching collective decisions on matters of policy and procedure.</p></blockquote>
<p>Let&#8217;s think of it in terms of the U.S. Federal Government:</p>
<blockquote><p>Executive Branch = <span style="color:#ff0000;">The Office of the SDSU President</span></p>
<p>Assembly = <span style="color:#ff0000;">SDSU Associated Students</span></p>
<p>Senate = <span style="color:#ff0000;">SDSU University Senate</span></p></blockquote>
<p>While these bodies don&#8217;t operate in the exact same manner as the U.S. government nor do they have equal powers,  at San Diego State each of these bodies have certain roles in the decision making here on campus.</p>
<p>And SDSU&#8217;s administration takes this shared role very seriously, meaning that students really do have a voice in the decision making process here.</p>
<p>Just as the <a href="http://as.sdsu.edu/govt/council/index.html" target="_blank">Associated Students Council</a> welcomes a few SDSU faculty members onto its boards and committees, the <a href="http://newscenter.sdsu.edu/universitysenate/index.aspx" target="_blank">SDSU University Senate</a> provides a few seats on each of its subcommittees for students.</p>
<p>But this is not just done for show. In most cases, students that sit on these subcommittees have full voting rights and their input is sought out, considered, and appreciated. Many students that have served on these subcommittees have commented that they believe the faculty and staff members they serve with are committed to serving the students of SDSU.</p>
<p>A.S. has been given the responsibility of appointing students to the various subcommittees on the Senate through our Vice President of University Affairs. Mina Azim, who is serving in that role this year, has been working hard to make sure that students fill these seats so that the student voice is represented in all matters that affect them.</p>
<p>There are still seats available on many of the subcommittees of the SDSU University Senate! If you are an SDSU student in good standing, please consider applying for one of these opportunities. Most committees only meet a few times a semester, so the time committment is minimal, but you have the chance to gain some phenomenal experience.</p>
<p>Also, students are welcome to attend the SDSU University Senate&#8217;s regular meetings, which will be held from 2-4:30 pm in AL-101 on the following dates this school year:</p>

<div>The San Diego State University Police Department would like to welcome everyone to the Fall 2011 Semester. We depend on each and every member of the university community to take an active role in their safety and security by following a few simple precautions:</div>

<div>- Remember to lock your car and secure all valuables out of sight. If you have security devices for your vehicle, i.e. Clubs, alarms or vehicle immobilizers, use them.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>- When you leave your apartments or your rooms, lock your doors and windows.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>- Do not leave personal items of value unattended anywhere on campus.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>- Pay attention to your surroundings; avoid distractions. Immediately report any suspicious activity to the University Police Department (when in doubt, call 911 for all emergencies or 619-594-1991 for non-emergency police services).</div>
<div> </div>
<div>- Use the &#8220;buddy system&#8221; and look out for each other. Safety escorts are available dusk to dawn to and from any campus location. To use this service, call 619-594-6659.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>- To obtain police, fire or emergency medical services, dial 911 from your cell phone, any campus phone or activate any &#8220;Blue Light&#8221; Emergency Duress Phone. Our 24-hour Non-Emergency phone number is 619-594-1991.</div>

<div>- The University has initiated a mass notification system to keep you safe and informed in the event of a campus emergency. <div>- The Campus Safety and Security report is completed by the University Police Department, in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="mceTemp mceIEcenter" style="text-align:left;"><strong>District 7 City Councilmember Marti Emerald and The San Diego City Council declared today, July 26, 2011, to be &#8220;San Diego State University Associated Students Good Neighbor Program Day&#8221; in the City of San Diego.</strong></div>

<p>The Good Neighbor Program (GNP), which was established as a program of the A.S. in the early 1990&#8242;s, works year-round to improve the quality of life on campus and in the neighborhoods surrounding the SDSU campus. The communities that make up the College Area are some of the most diverse in the city, and adding to that diversity is the mix of student residents that live amongst families, senior citizens, and other non-student residents.</p>
<p>With the help and oversight of the A.S. Vice President of External Affairs and A.S. staff, a committed team of student volunteers keep the program running, assisting their peers and working with community members to make sure that everyone who lives in the College Area maintains the high quality of life that exists in the neighborhood. Volunteers regularly distribute a brochure called &#8220;<a href="http://as.sdsu.edu/good_neighbor/Community_Living.pdf">Getting Along with Your College Area Neighbors</a>&#8221; to student residents; attend community meetings; listen to concerns from residents; and participate in community beautification projects such as regular trash pick-ups.</p>
<p>The Good Neighbor Program operates a hotline in which community members can voice concerns about neighborhood issues or ask questions. Messages to the hotline are checked daily by A.S. staff and routed to student volunteers who promptly respond to all inquiries.</p>
<p>The program has has only been a benefit to the campus and surrounding community and GNP leaders are planning to continue the program&#8217;s tradition of service to the community in the upcoming school year.</p></div>

<p>WHEREAS, student enrollment at San Diego State University (SDSU) has steadily increased over the last two decades to its present enrollment of approximately 30,000 students; and this has led to increased impacts from student occupied housing on the neighborhoods surrounding the campus, such as noise, litter, and parking congestion; AND</p>
<p>WHEREAS, SDSU Associated Students, recognizing the above impacts, founded the Good Neighbor Program in 1990 with the mission of increasing the students&#8217; awareness of the relationship between their behavior and the quality of life on the SDSU campus in the surrounding neighborhoods; AND</p>
<p>WHEREAS, the SDSU Associated Students Good Neighbor Program has engaged in numerous community service activities in the neighborhoods around the San Diego State University campus, such as educational campaigns, community outreach, and neighborhood clean-ups; AND</p>
<p>WHEREAS, the Good Neighbor Program has assigned a representative to the College Area Community Planning Board/Community Council who has consistently served said body honorably; AND</p>
<p>WHEREAS, the Good Neighbor Program has demonstrated a special commitment to the welfare of the community, improving the character and the quality of life in the neighborhoods adjacent to the school, and the greater San Diego community; NOW, THEREFORE,</p>
<p><strong>BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Council of the City of San Diego, that this Council, for and on behalf of the people of San Diego, does hereby declare July 26, 2011 as &#8220;SDSU ASSOCIATED STUDENTS GOOD NEIGHBOR PROGRAM DAY&#8221; in the City of San Diego.</strong></p>
<p><em>*The resolution was signed by all eight San Diego City Councilmembers and Mayor Jerry Sanders.</p>

<p>Cody is a Communication major and Business Management minor. He is a fifth-year senior and plans on graduating in spring 2012. He is a member and former President of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. In the upcoming year Cody envisions a campus connected by communication. With the launch of AztecTV, a new student television network, he hopes to engage students on all levels of University activity. Cody also wishes to continue the sustainable efforts of A.S. and its affiliates. Cody&#8217;s hometown is in Huntington Beach, California, and in his free time he enjoys the southern California lifestyle of doing something fun in the sun.</p></blockquote>

He is a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and was the former President during the 2008-2009 school year. Darin enjoys snowboarding, traveling, and challenging himself with new adventures in life. In the upcoming year, Darin is determined to continue pushing for new and innovative sustainability initiatives, develop SDSU&#8217;s young leaders for the future, and to create a closer relationship between Associated Students and the student body. Darin was born and raised in Lake Forest, California.</div>

<p style="text-align:left;">Krista is pursuing a degree in Political Science with a minor in Leadership Development. She has been a member of Associated Students for over two years, participating as a member of a variety of board and committees. She enjoys being an Aztec, traveling and watching a good movie. In the upcoming year, Krista plans to write a bill with the A.S. Lobby Corp to increase funding for higher education; develop relations with local, state and federal legislators; increase communication across campus to have a more informed student body about budget cuts and tuition hikes; and form strong relationships with the local community and alumni. Finally, she strives to develop better relations with the California State Student Association to collaborate on issues, have more powerful rallies, stronger lobbying visits, and increase voter turnouts. Krista is from Temecula, California.</p>

<p>Rob is in his fourth year at SDSU majoring in Political Science with a minor in Business Marketing, expecting to graduate in the Spring of 2012. Those close to him would say he is an aspiring young man with a knack for sailing boats, reading novels, and traveling to new places. During his time at SDSU, Rob has involved himself in several on-campus organizations most notably, his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon. This upcoming fall Rob looks to work with student organizations to better educate them on A.S. financial policies as well as assist the A.S. in their relocation efforts during the construction of the new Student Union. His main focus will be outreaching to his peers and advocating active student involvement. By collaborating with the A.S. he hopes to decrease the impacts of the budget crisis to ensure its sustained success. Rob‚s family resides in Lafayette, CA.</p>

<p>Mina is a Business Management major pursuing a minor in Leadership Development. Starting her freshman year on campus, Mina has been actively involved in Associated Students and has served as the AS Events Commissioner for the past two years. She is also a proud member of Rotaract of SDSU and Aztec P.R.I.D.E. Mina is passionate about leadership development, environmental advocacy, and student affairs. She enjoys traveling, spending time with her friends, family, and dog, being a humanitarian and living life to the fullest. She plans to obtain a Masters and pursue a career within student affairs, social justice, and/or environmental advocacy. In the upcoming year, Mina plans to enhance the college experience at SDSU by empowering the student voice to the University Administration and Senate, enhancing sustainability projects and programs, encouraging more students to get involved on campus, and executing an even more amazing GreenFest 2012! <p>This week is about celebration &#8230; celebrating those who have come before us to help make SDSU an inclusive campus that educates and develops all students and welcomes all faculty and staff.</p>
<p>We are celebrating a new chapter in San Diego State’s history, as Dr. Elliot Hirshman took over as President of San Diego State University last week.</p>
<p>I am so pleased that Mrs. Jeri Hirshman, one of the newest members of the Aztec family, is able to join us here today. Her being here today already speaks volumes to the commitment that the Hirshman’s have to the diversity that we have so long celebrated here at SDSU.</p>
<p>Again, thank you for being here Mrs. Hirshman.</p>
<p>It is an honor to be here on behalf of SDSU students and to have SDSU’s Rainbow Flag Raising Ceremony be a part of the San Diego Pride kick-off a week off events that are the highlight of the year for the LGBT community.</p>
<p>My name is Cody Barbo and I am the Associated Students President.  It is a privilege to speak to you today on behalf of the nearly 30,000 students of San Diego State University celebrating pride, celebrating diversity, and celebrating you!</p>
<p>As San Diego gears up for this weekend’s 37th anniversary of Pride, it is interesting to reflect on the contributions that San Diego State students have made on San Diego’s Pride movement over the years.</p>
<p>The Aztec Center, which served as San Diego State’s student union from 1968 until this past May, was home to much LGBT activism during its 43-year run as the hub of student life here on campus.</p>
<p>The Gay Liberation Front was a small but vocal organization that was founded at San Diego State in 1970 and did most of its organizing out of meeting rooms in the Aztec Center.</p>
<p>The group, which disbanded only a few years after its founding, was responsible for organizing what some consider to be the first Pride event in San Diego in 1970, which was called the “Gay-In” and held at Presidio Park.</p>
<p>Even though just over 100 people showed up that year, it was a monumental accomplishment for that time as it was the first time that LGBT people in San Diego had a public celebration to freely express themselves. The GLF also laid the foundation for what would eventually become San Diego’s now large and vibrant LGBT Community Center.</p>
<p>The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Student Union, which was formed in 1975 as the “Gay Student Union”, has also been an active part of campus and community organizing, working hard to make sure that safe spaces have existed on campus for LGBT students.</p>

<p>The group, which also has been centered out of the Aztec Center since its founding, has clearly had an impact on San Diego State’s recent designation as one the “Top 20 LGBT Friendly” campuses in the nation.</p>
<p>I am proud of the work that my fellow students, current and past, have done to make SDSU a better community that is supportive of diversity and equality for all.</p>
<p>I am also very excited that the new Aztec Student Union, slated to open in Fall 2013, will include a number of student service facilities that the campus has lacked for many years, including: a larger multi-cultural center, a women’s center, AND a permanent LGBT center, which will serve the needs of the large and vibrant LGBT community that studies and works here.</p>
<p>Associated Students is so pleased to be able to offer space for these important communities to come together, organize, learn, and celebrate.</p>
<p>As this week’s celebration of “Pride Around the World” begins, I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on how far we have come at San Diego State, in California, and across the nation and world in the struggle for equality, while keeping in mind the work that still needs to be done to ensure that everyone has a safe place to live, work, study, and live their lives freely.</p>
